A day or two before the wedding, the Sangeet ceremony takes place. It involves a lot of singing and dancing by both the families to celebrate the union of two families. Then, on the day of the wedding or a day prior to it, kangana is tied on the wrists of both the bride and the groom. Kangana is basically a bracelet made with stringing together betel nuts, tamarind and tiny shells (cockles) in the sacred thread or 'mouli'. The ceremony is formalized by a priest and these bracelets remain tied on their wrists till the completion of all wedding rituals. They basically offer protection from any evil eye. In the henna or Mehendi ceremony, hands of the bride and the groom are dyed red with the henna paste. It is considered very auspicious in the Indian matrimonials. Brides mehendi is much more intricate than the grooms mehendi.
The Maid-of-Honor toast needs to inform the audience of things they may not have known about the bride that they would be interested in. Here is an example: When our friend Paula was married, The Maid of Honor, Theresa, reminisced about the time in the 7th grade she and Paula made a list of all the "hot guys" in their class and the groom Ross came out on top. These types of stories will entertain the guests and not embarrass or bore them. Avoid anything that is off color, sexual, or embarrassing no matter how tempting. Always keep it PG at least.
If you desire live music over a DJ, consider tying your musician selection to the theme or location of your event. A beachside bash naturally lends itself to the sound of steel drums, while a trumpet quartet will sound impressive in an elaborate cathedral.
