DIY Polycarbonate

DIY home security window reinforcementI hadn’t originally considered this. I thought my front door was secure. But then one day I realized I could reach my deadbolt latch from that window. Someone could smash the glass, reach in, and unlock my door.

Yeah, that’s completely unacceptable.

I didn’t feel like spending the money on a new front door. So instead I ordered up some polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate is amazing stuff. Nearly 250 times stronger than glass–this is the stuff they use on fighter jet canopies. (Plexiglas is only about ten times stronger than glass, just for comparison.)

So I ordered a 1/8th inch sheet, cut to the shape of my window, from a company called TAP Plastics. And voila.

I screwed it to the door using metal screws–meaning screws designed for use on sheet metal, rather than wood. Wood screws wouldn’t hold very well, and someone could just pop the PC right out of the window frame. I also screwed it into the frame of the window.

Nobody’s breaking through that!
