I know firsthand how easy it is to break into a house using a ladder… because I once did it. When I was growing up, my parents weren’t exactly on top of home repairs. For about three years, our front door lock didn’t work properly. It would often stick, and it was impossible to unlock it.
One weekend, my parents were away, and I was out late with my sister and a group of friends. We got home at about 3 in the morning. And the key wasn’t working in the lock. The other doors were locked too.
But I knew my bedroom window wasn’t latched. And I also knew my dad kept his ladders hanging on the back of the house.
So we went around back, fetched the ladder and I climbed into the house through my bedroom window. The whole process took maybe five minutes.
And no, the neighbors didn’t call the cops. We were goofy teenagers, and certainly making enough noise to wake the dead. And we knew some of the neighbors pretty well. But the police weren’t called.
Had we been burglars, we could have easily robbed that house of everything it contained.
So remember, don’t leave ladders hanging around!
